Design Shine 2026
The AIA Austin Emerging Professionals is excited to announce the return of Design Shine at the UMLAUF Sculpture Garden from December 2026 – February 2027. We invite all emerging professionals, local architects, landscape architects, artists, and designers to submit ideas for an art installation that can be enjoyed both day and night. The deadline for proposals is August 28 at 11:59pm. This year we are selecting three winning designs and each team is eligible for materials reimbursement up to $1,500. Design Shine, a collaboration between the UMLAUF and the AIA Austin Emerging Professionals Committee (AIA EP), explores innovative design and artistic creativity. Through exhibitions, panel discussions, design charrettes, and competitions, Design Shine aims to highlight the importance of outdoor community spaces and provide opportunities for designers to showcase their talents.
This year’s theme is “Project & Reflect” and will showcase designs centered around lighting, shadow, reflection, and refraction that complement the Garden and relate to Charles Umlauf’s sculptures. Designs should embody innovation, recycled materials, aesthetic appeal, and a deep connection to the environment. These features will evoke emotion, provoke thought, or tell a story through their design elements, materials, and interaction with space.
