The new Student Activity Center will be a one-of-a-kind project planned, funded, and occupied by the students of the University of Texas at Austin. The project will be financed by a $65 activity fee paid by all students once the new facility opens in 2011.

The Activity Center was designed by Overland Partners in association with WTW Architects (Pittsburgh, PA) and interiors by Studio 8 Architects and built by SpawGlass Contractors.

In keeping with priorities articulated by students, the Center will be focused on activity spaces, such as performance (black box theatre & auditorium), small, medium, & large event spaces, conference & meeting spaces, casual lounges, dining spaces, student organizations, administration, and outdoor gathering spaces. The Student Activity Center is expected to be approximately 109,000 gross square feet (GSF) in size and to be complemented by an additional 46,000 GSF of landscaped courtyards and roof terraces.

The Student Activity Center building will include two upper floors of academic space for the College of Liberal Arts, Liberal Arts Phase I. This space, approximately 40,000 GSF, will be funded separately by the University.

The Student Activity Center will be designed with an institutional quality enclosure with an expected lifespan of 75 to 100 years. Exterior materials will be durable, long-lived and consistent with the standards of the campus Master Plan. Public interior finishes and building systems will be consistent with high-end commercial standards, with an expected lifespan of 20 to 30 years.
The Student Activity Center will be LEED certified at either the Silver or the Gold level. The project will minimize adverse environmental impacts by maximizing open, shaded space on the site; reducing water use; using regional and recycled content materials; optimizing energy performance of the enclosure and operating systems; and creating a healthy interior environment with plentiful daylight, views and connections to the outdoors.
