Community Engagement through Architecture: In conversation with Donna Carter, FAIA

Join AIA Austin’s Small Firms Roundtable this Friday, January 22, from 11:45-1pm for a discussion with Donna Carter, FAIA, about her current involvement with the restoration of a John Chase building located at 1191 Navasota St in east Austin, soon to become a community engagement center under the direction of UT Austin’s Division of Diversity and Community Engagement.

Donna Carter is a principle of Carter Design Associates, a small firm here in Austin. We will discuss the Chase building, it’s legacy and the vision for it’s future, as well as other projects Carter Design Associates has been involved with in Austin and beyond. As a leader of a small firm, she has incredible insight into a variety of project types and processes. Additionally, Donna is very active in AIA Austin and the Austin community at large. As a black female architect, Donna brings a distinct voice to her work and our profession. We will learn about her leadership in a variety of different contexts and roles within the practice of architecture.

We look forward to having you join us over Zoom for what promises to be a very insightful discussion.

Learning Objectives:

1. Recognize the legacy of certain buildings within our community and the importance of preserving them into the future.

2. Describe how architecture can be utilized to foster community engagement.

3. Analyze various project types as they relate to urban infrastructure and the opportunities which exist for small firms to participate in civic projects.

4. Recognize the distinct voice Donna brings to our profession as a black female.
