Join us for our second installment of our Luncheon Speaker Series for a discussion of the I-35 Reconnection Project by Juan Cotera, FAIA & Phillip Reed, AIA.

Making Space Public, an Intervention Under the Freeway
The I-35 Reconnection Project

Large multilane freeway projects were constructed in many cities in the US during the creation of the national highway system.  Cotera+Reed was asked by neighborhood groups to develop a project which would both correct some of the negative aspects of a particular overpass and crossing and address some of the complex political and cultural conditions that the freeway has attracted over the years.

To have any impact, the project had to be at the scale of the freeway, and would need to work in both the day and the night.  Cotera+Reed worked in weightless material to avoid impacting the physicality of the upper deck.

Fourteen curved and tapered galvanized steel poles are supported under the freeway deck, and area lighting is attached along the undersides.  Individually, the shape of the poles resembles a suspension bridge, re-associating the spot with connecting.  Connecting land masses, across an interruption of the landscape, proposes the idea of separation and connecting at the same time.  It is intended to be a gesture - a handshake under the freeway.

Seating is limited - sign up early!
