The MLK, Jr. Transit Oriented District: Best Practices for Community Development Around Transit in Austin Texas

Join our speaker, Will Meredith, as we explore numerous insights and reflections on a 12 year, 30 acre mixed-use in-fill project called the MLK, Jr. Transit Oriented District located in central East Austin.  Will Meredith (MFI Real Estate, LLC) will provide clear and profound tools for planners, designers, citizens and architects to harness the power of community partners, the sustainable food movement, and public-private partnerships to build more complete and socially sustainable communities.  Mr. Meredith will also provide an inside perspective on his recent academic research with the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture Community and Regional Planning program; graduate level insights grappling with the realities of gentrification in booming East Austin.  This project was awarded “Community Redevelopment of 2011” by Envision Central Texas and this presentation is not to be missed by anyone interested in the gravity of social sustainability in placemaking and community planning.

Will Meredith is a community developer and social equity advocate based in Austin Texas.  Mr. Meredith co-founded MFI Real Estate LLC in 2006, an award winning firm which focused on leveraging social impact in the built environment through practices of sustainable urbanism, educational opportunities and community values.  Mr. Meredith is also co-founder and Director of AX5 Resources LLC, a construction technology firm which specializes in advancing craftsmanship through digital fabrication technics.  AX5 Resources provides comprehensive design build services with 3D scanning, 3D printing and CNC (computerized numerical coding) machines.  In addition to his work in real estate development and construction, Mr. Meredith also works in the civic and social services realm, including but not limited to five years of service on the Board of Directors with both The Austin Film Society (2007-2011) and Open Door Preschools (2007-2011) as well as Advisory Board positions with The Sustainable Food Center, Creative Action (formally Theatre Action Project) and EcoRise Youth Innovations.  Since 2006, Mr. Meredith has served on the Board of Directors of MFI Foundation and helped lead on ground breaking projects such as the UT / Dell Social Innovation Competition,  The Long Center, The new Blanton Museum of Art, The new Austin’ Children’s Museum, The Trail Foundation Signage Project, and many others.
