Activating Alleys as Public Spaces: The Role of Urban Design

Join us for our April Luncheon as we explore the role of alleys in Austin's urban makeup and the opportunities for alleys to be transformed into vibrant urban spaces through urban design and other practices. Traditionally seen as utilitarian corridors for trash trucks and deliveries, alleys are often considered to be eyesores and places to avoid at night.  Other cities around the world have been embracing alleys for the special role they play in providing engaging and intimate spaces, enhancing the pedestrian experience, and supporting small businesses and the arts. Speakers Heather Way and Chris Jackson, RLA, LEED AP will explain how, drawing from these examples and 20 Ft Wide (a pilot alley activation project in downtown Austin), we can enhance Austin's alleys and their potential to help fill Austin's need for activated public spaces.
