D. Michael Hellinghausen bio

D. Michael Hellinghausen was born in Breckenridge, Texas, the second of eight children. He attended junior high and high school in Midland, Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Notre Dame, and a Master of Architecture from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mike began his career in his hometown of Midland in 1979, becoming a licensed architect in 1983. After graduate school, as a staff architect for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, he managed numerous projects on the Lubbock HSC campus, as well as a new clinic on the Amarillo HSC campus. While at Centerbrook Architects, in Essex, Connecticut, he served as project architect for university projects at Lawrence University and Dartmouth College.

Upon joining OMNIPLAN Architects in Dallas in 1995, he initially served as a project architect and project manager, while in more recent years as a senior project manager and principal-in-charge on a number of institutional and office building projects. Since assuming his current role of Principal and COO in 1999, he has also managed the operational and financial aspects of the firm, while developing and implementing programs to promote sound business practices and enhance staff performance.

Mike is a speaker and presenter on the subjects of design firm management and finance, and writes an occasional blog post on these topics at From Blueprints to Greenbacks. He has presented workshops at numerous Texas Society of Architects conventions. In addition, Mike has served several leadership roles with TxA, including on the Finance Committee (2012-2016), as Treasurer (2016-2017), and is now serving as President-Elect for 2018.

Mike is also active in his community. Prior to his involvement with TxA, he served for 6 years on the St. Thomas Aquinas school advisory council. He is a long-time member of the Notre Dame Club of Dallas. He and his wife Linda live in East Dallas and have three children. Mike is an avid cook, cyclist and reader.
