This edition of Design Talks will feature Kevin Kudo King, AIA, LEED AP, of Olson Kundig. Olson Kundig is a deeply collaborative design firm, known for architecture informed by a history of craft and artistic production. The firm prioritizes integration of artists and craftspeople that are local to their projects, deepening connections to place and crafting an even more rich experience. “You add new layers of meaning when the hand of the maker is visible,” says Principal/Owner Kevin Kudo-King. “A deliberate expression of craft creates a tactile connection between guest and culture, resulting in something wholly unique and completely authentic to that place.”

Learning Objectives

As a result of attending this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Understand how a firm integrates the collaboration with artisans and makers into the fabric of their practice.
  2. Procure local craftspeople and artists who have a connection to the project in order to craft a deeper experience of architecture.
  3. Understand how to highlight art and craftwork as a deliberate focal point in architectural design.
  4. Create authenticity in design through connecting building occupants and culture of place.

About Our Speaker

Kevin Kudo King, AIA, LEED AP
Over the span of his twenty-five-year tenure at Olson Kundig, principal/owner Kevin Kudo-King has played an integral role in the design, production and management of numerous award-winning projects. In collaboration with fellow owners Tom Kundig and Jim Olson, Kevin has led the design of museum gallery expansions, large-scale international residential projects, and urban mixed-use projects, among others. Kevin is known for his collaborative design practice, which is deeply informed by the history of craft and artistic production. His designs emphasize an integration of art and architecture that is grounded in a contextual response to the natural conditions of a site, many of which are international. Kevin’s current projects include a variety of private homes and hospitality destinations across North America, South America, Europe and Asia.
