How Brains and Buildings Interact:
Our Conscious and Unconscious Response to Design

Join us as we welcome Eve Edelstein, PhD, EDAC, Assoc. AIA, F-AAA, for our 2019 Design Talks series! Dr. Edelstein explores how design modifies the brain, body, and our behavior as we respond to our built environments. Our new technological age allows us to see the connections in the brain as it drives not only our conscious responses to design, but also our silent and unconscious reactions to architecture and the physical world. Immersing ourselves inside virtual reality simulations, we can map brainwaves as people find their way through buildings, and use EEG to reveal if sound, light, and location influence our bodies and behavior. These findings can be translated into principles that inform the design of all places where people and places interact.

Dr. Eve Edelstein’s expertise draws on her background as a clinician, researcher, educator, and designer. Dr. Edelstein completed a PhD in neuroscience at University College London, and an M.Arch. in architecture and a B.A. in anthropology at UC Berkeley. Her work as a clinician supports her interest in design for the continuum of cultural, physical, and organizational needs. Working with the University of California San Diego, Eve developed and applied advanced measures, bio-sensors, and virtual reality trackers to reveal the influence of design. Dr. Edelstein directs Perkins+Will's HxLab, which designs for the human experience, to create places that better serve wellbeing, engagement, performance, cognition, emotion, and health itself. Eve’s applied research with tier-one universities and academic medical centers, engineering, and design-thinking institutes includes the use of innovative virtual reality and technologies to evaluate visual and auditory effects on human performance and clinical outcomes. Working with the P+W design teams, Eve conducts pre and post-occupancy and on-site original studies to reveal the influence of design on brains, bodies, and behavior. Dr. Edelstein speaks internationally including keynotes for the AIA and the Academy for the Advancement of Science.
