Event Design Talks

February 8, 2022 - 12:00pm

Elgin Rising

Join us for the first Design Talks event of 2022, Elgin Rising! Speakers are Jana McCann, FAIA; Molly Alexander, and Amy Miller.

Ten years ago the City of Elgin participated in the Sustainable Places project to revitalize their downtown. Join us to learn about that process and how it transformed this small town into a vital, thriving destination. Our speakers are Jana McCann, FAIA, principal with McCann Adams Studio, Elgin dweller and business owner and the executive director of the Downtown Austin Alliance Molly Alexander, and City of Elgin’s director of community services Amy Miller.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe how the three consistent pillars (strong city commitment, citizen engaged community, and dedicated staff) that made this project a success came together and how architects and planners played into the mix.
  2. Analyze how changing city ordinances and zoning created smart opportunities to preserve Elgin's downtown character while still modernizing buildings to meet the current needs of commercial and residential space.
  3. Elgin applied for and was given a sustainable places grant in 2012. Attendees will recognize how an outside force like a grant can kickstart huge change for a city.
  4. Attendees will recognize how, once a city has transformed itself, programming must be ongoing to make a downtown continue to sustain. Elgin has created that programming and the panelists will reveal how programming has created community and culture in their downtown.

The event will take place on Zoom.
