Second Chances: 2 Decades Later

When a new owner wanted to renovate a house our firm designed 20 years ago, we were excited to get a "second chance" to revisit one of our favorite designs. The course will look at the resilience of the initial design, the changes in building science that have taken place in the last two decades, and the challenges and opportunities inherent in remodels of fine homes.

Learning Objectives:

  1.
Assess the resilience of a custom home design from 20 years ago.
  2. Recognize the influence of the original design on the design of a renovation and expansion for a new owner.
  3. Evaluate changes in construction science and building technologies that have happened in the past two decades to address emerging environmental issues impacting resilience, occupant safety, and the human experience.
  4. Describe the design and construction challenges of renovating and updating a custom residential structure to facilitate greater resilience with the building and the site.
