Design and Construction of an Heirloom Residence

with Alterstudio and Rauser Construction

Four generations of one family have enjoyed the land on which a new house is being built. We will discuss design and construction of an "heirloom" residence, meant to be passed down through generations. Through the use of enduring materials and robust weatherproofing strategies, a flexible interior design open to future alteration, well-engineered mechanical and solar systems, and redundant back-up systems the house is intend to serve a long life with its "good bones".

Learning Objectives

  1. Implement waterproofing and air-sealing strategies at the roof, walls and windows to ensure an enduring envelope.
  2. Recognize how a well-designed mechanical system that includes dehumidifiers and ERVs (energy recovery ventilators) benefits indoor air quality
Describe the workings of a solar installation that fully offsets the electricity usage of a large house, and includes a battery and generator backup system in anticipation of more frequent extreme weather events.
  4. Analyze how design and implementation decisions were made to balance the best of current technology with the understanding that it needs to be simple to use and easy to upgrade or change out later.
