Designing, Building, Developing on Small Infill Lots

This month’s presentation will be led by Davey McEathron, AIA of Davey McEathron Architecture and Rock Paper Build – a design-build firm he started with his wife in 2020. This discussion will look at the challenges and opportunities afforded on small infill lots in Austin from the perspectives of the architect, the builder and the developer - all of these hats worn by the husband and wife design/build team. Topics will range from analyzing and acquiring lots, developing construction budgets, financing, hiring sub-contractors, setting expectations, self-performing tasks, surprises, risks and exit strategies.

Learning Objectives

  1. Lot Selection and Site Strategy: Recognize what makes a good lot when considering developing for both a House and an Accessory Dwelling Unit, or a Duplex.

  2. Designing for Everyone: Describe what does it mean when designing for a speculative client – how to be inclusive while also designing for yourself – no one’s telling you no.

  3. Budgeting a speculative project: Analyze where to start and what am I forgetting?

  4. The Build: Subcontractors to Inspections and how to circumnavigate the processes.
