Beneath the Trees with coXist Studio & FIA Homes- How to embrace Heritage Trees on your site

In Austin we love our trees, but how do we build around them, permit them and embrace them into our designs? We will be looking at the Live Oaks Residence, a roughly 5,500 square foot new build that is also home to NINE heritage Live Oaks. We will discuss the design strategies we employed to best highlight this spectacular property and go through the hurdles that were presented during permitting and construction along the way. Our client / developer will speak to the special construction techniques he had to use in protecting these majestic trees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Assess the existing site conditions and study the buildable area available between the trees and canopies of this project and how this impacted our design decisions.
  2. Recognize the strategies that were implemented to work with the City of Austin Tree Department and our arborist for this project.
  3. Analyze the design and layout strategies utilized to highlight the trees throughout the site.
  4. Describe how all these strategies play out in the field with a discussion with the contractor on the challenges and rewards of working within the Heritage trees.
