Representatives from The City of Austin Watershed Protection Department will be on hand to present Flash-floods and Floodplain Management through Design (Towards a Climate Resilient Austin)

Watershed Protection Department administers the City's participation in FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program and the Community Rating System program for encouraging the natural and beneficial uses of floodplains.. The City's floodplain management regulations promote development that reduces flood risk.

The session will include a discussion of the different types of flooding and the different threats to communities these types of flooding pose, followed by a more in depth discussion of flash flooding and the unique conditions in central Texas that combine to create “flash flood alley”. Participants will then learn how the rules of the National Flood Insurance Program and the higher standards adopted by the City of Austin aim to minimize and/or mitigate the risks posed by the threat of flash flooding, including a discussion of how design choices impact flood insurance costs and long term resiliency.
