Waterproofing Used as the Air Barrier on the Other Sides of the Building Enclosure

Presented by John Posenecker, PE Principal Terracon Consultants, Inc

The presentation will locate the portions of the continuous air barrier that are not part of the above grade walls, roofing or fenestrations. It will provide a basic overview of below grade and elevated deck waterproofing systems, their installation challenges and performance testing techniques. Several critical transitions to surrounding systems will be identified and details reviewed.

Learning Objectives:
1.    Locating the portions of a building’s continuous air barrier that are not part of the above grade walls, roofing or fenestrations.
2.    Basic understanding of available waterproofing systems, their assemblies and their integration into the design for below grade and elevated deck waterproofing applications.
3.    Techniques for performance testing of waterproofing systems.
4.    Challenges associated with detailing and installing the transitions between waterproofing and surrounding air barrier, roofing and fenestration systems.
