Dr. James Henson will give us a view of the political landscape of the 84th Legislature as the session enters the most active period of the session.  Among other topics, he’ll discuss:

  • The impact of politics among state leadership
  • The attitudes of urban, suburban, and rural voters on key issues
  • The complexities of views on different levels of government in the state
  • The impact of coalition politics in the Republican Party in Texas on politics and policy in the legislature

Dr. James Henson directs the Texas Politics Project and teaches in the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin. Since 2008, he has directed the University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll with Daron Shaw and Joshua Blank. He is a regular contributor to the Texas Tribune and their companion site TribTalk, and his analyses of Texas politics appear regularly in national media including The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, NPR, and other outlets. He is the co-author of an open-access, web-based textbook on Texas government that is used by thousands of students in Texas, both at UT and at colleges and universities across the state, and recently produced the first completely online multimedia course in Texas politics and government to be offered by UT-Austin.
