The Tejano Monument: a Dream, a Plan, a Legacy

Join AIA Austin’s “Latinos in Architecture” for an architecture and public art discussion with Jaime Beaman, former AIA president and principal of CasaBella Architects.  As a member of the Tejano Monument Committee, Mr. Beaman oversaw the design and construction of the historical monument to commemorate the 500-year role of Tejanos in Texas and the Spanish-Mexican legacy in the state.  The idea for the monument was conceived in 2000 and thus began The Tejano Monument’s 12-year journey to a prominent place on the Capitol grounds. The Legislature approved funding for the project in 2001.  As the first of its kind at the Capitol, the monument fills a gaping hole in the popular narrative of Texas, by noting the achievements of Tejanos long before the settlers began arriving in the 1800s.
