DV Charrette with American YouthWorks Casa Verde Builders

This past weekend, Sept. 9 and 10th, AIA Design Voice and American Youth Works Casa Verde Builders (DV/CVB) held a two day seminar and charrette for the students at CVB to help them understand the design process and design new, affordable, sustainable, lovely single family and duplex houses for them to build.  Visit the AIA Design Voice FB page for more photos. Day One was a lecture by Francois Levy, AIA on sustainable design and an  introduction to the physics of heat transfer.  CVB builds 5 star AEGBP houses and many of the students were already familiar with these concepts.  Tom Hatch, FAIA gave a slide show tour of housing design from his firm and others, showcasing affordable, market rate and luxury housing.  There were lots of ohhs and ahhs, and Tom asked the students to pick out "flaws", as he described how the architects  overcame challenges to the design by the environment.  Jana McCann, AIA and Ellen Hunt, AIA guided the students through a programming exercise to design the house that they would want to live in.  The elements were almost all included in the CVB houses, except for the shark tank in the living room. Saturday was an all day charrette from 9-3.  There were 4 teams of architects, UT students and CVB students, all working together.  The teams produced 4 architect led designs and 3 other student led designs.  CVB is ready to build them, they received a great response!  Many of the designs were traditional, with screened porches, pocket gardens, and creative approaches to duplex living.  Our next step is to have the architect team leaders finalize the drawings so they can be presented to the CVB/AYW Board and to the community.  We will post the designs on the website as soon as they are available.   Thanks to the AIA members and designers who participated (in no particular order): Eva Schone Charles Di Piazza Mell Lawrence Tom Hatch John Cameron Mark Oberholzer Francois Levy Emily Levings Jana McCann Ellen Hunt Ed Wallace   UT Students: Katie Welsh Andrew Houston Travis Hicks Eric Lam   CVB Students: Eric Torres Matt Tibbs Megan Schrull Lizette Ortiz Ryan Chamberlin David Doyle Ian Jonhston Joaquin Lugo Matt Rogers   Extended applause for the CVB board members and staff that participated and made the day possible: Ed Wallace David Clauss Sharon Yarbrough Rob Winchester Rachel Matvy Steve Alvarez Natalie Stoppelli Levi Singleton Louise Liller Parc Smith   Special thanks to our invited reviewers: Walter Moreau, Foundation Communities Lisa Tipps, former AYW board member Jim Adams, McCann Adams Studio   Finally thanks to the DV/AIA team that spent the last 6 months planning this event: Jana McCann Ellen Hunt Eva Schone Catherine French Kristina Schlegel Sally Fly
