Emerging Professionals

Emerging Professionals bring the opportunity to all interns to find mentors, join exam study groups and network with their peers.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Mentorship Program
AIA Austin is excited to implement the Mentorship Program sponsored by the Emerging Professionals Committee.  This is a 6 month commitment meeting at least once a month. Those who are eligible to participate are at least 3rd year design students in undergraduate programs, master program candidates, recent graduates and those who have been licensed for up to five years. Once all applications are reviewed and received, you will be given guidelines for the Mentorship Program.

Click here for the application and return it to AIA Austin by November 13th. The committee will then look over all the applications and match you with a professional in your area of interest.

CURRENT NEWS:

ARE Fees to Increase on 1 October 2009
Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) fees will increase by $40 per division effective 1 October 2009. The increase is due to recent incidents of exam content disclosure by ARE candidates. The cost to develop and replace the exposed content and handle the administrative and legal costs related to these incidents totals an estimated $1.1 million.
More info here and here.

NCARB officially passed the 6-month rule last weekend.  The timeframe is contingent upon NCARB getting an online reporting system in place and tested by Dec 31st, 2008.  If they get that done, then online reporting, every 6-months, will be mandatory starting July 1, 2009 for anyone starting a new IDP record, and will be mandatory for ALL interns after July 1, 2010.  If the online reporting is not in place by the end of 2008, then the effective dates for the rule change are pushed back by the length of the delay for the online system.  Here's a link to the official notification with all of the changes they passed.

In case you had not seen this change to TBAE policy, it went into effect on April 3rd. In addition to TBAE’s requirements of holding an accredited professional degree and having 6 months experience under a licensed architect, they have now added the stipulation from NCARB model law on ARE concurrency requiring that the exam candidate have opened their Council Record for IDP with NCARB prior to being granted exam eligibility.

You can see the amendment to the TBAE rules at this link under section 1.41(b).

ARE Study Group Sessions

Overview and Goals of ARE Study Sessions
1. To bring individuals together for sharing knowledge and providing mutual assistance when studying for the tests
2. To provide a continuing path for young professionals to obtain their license
3. To provide a method for the AIA to receive feedback about the ARE and study procedures to better serve future interns

Study sessions are held on Wednesday nights, 6:00-8:00pm, at the Center for Architecture (801 W. 12th Street).  The study sessions will focus on one specific section of the ARE every other month.

Attendees should review the ALS study material of the lessons indicated prior to the study session.

Anyone interested in issues affecting interns and associates is welcome to join us during our monthly meetings. We are currently organizing presentations on IDP, seminars on ARE, study groups, networking opportunities, and community service projects.  Join us!
