AIA Austin Urban Design / Government Affairs Committee   Changes to Building Code   Thanks for the great turnout. Here are a few highlights of our monthly brown-bag lunch meeting:   CARL WREN joined us from the Austin Fire Department to go over what is happening starting October 1st when IBC 2009 and IFC 2009 go into effect for Austin:    (1)    For all buildings, existing and new, there are improvements required for “luminous exits.” This will require luminous striping on handrails, steps, and certain signage. (IBC 403.5.5, IBC 1024) (2)    For new non-residential buildings over 120 feet high, provide a stretcher-sized elevator with emergency power and a 150 sf elevator lobby 2-hour rated on every floor.  This can be one of the passenger elevators during normal use, but it will have special capabilities for emergency evacuation. Slope the slab away from the elevator so that it does not flood from sprinklers. (IBC 403.6.1, 3007, 3008) (3)    For new buildings, especially underground structures, provide compatibility with emergency radio communication services. (IFC 510) (4)     For all new highrises over 420 feet high (good luck on building that high in Austin), provide an extra stairway, almost a secret stairway, that can be used for emergency personnel to ascend into every floor, without any contra-flow problems. (IBC 403.5.2)   SIGN UP for AIA Austin summer school August 12th and 13th at Norris Conference Center. There are dozens of classes available.
